Back in 2024 Destroyer of Light released a documentary about their last tour ever. They played some incredible shows and featured snippets of songs from bands they played with. My favorite of these were from Boise Idaho “blackened doom trio” Ghorot. I immediately had to give them a follow. Needless to say I am stoked to have gotten the opportunity to review their newest album Obsidian.
First off, I’m very impressed with the vocals. You’ve got one dude who sounds like a 9000 year old newly unearthed mountain wizard, one that sounds like something from DOOM (snes) that would beat you to death sans weapons and a secret third thing that I would also be afraid of. I’ve always been a huge fan of unique vocals. Throughout the album you are blugeoned with urgent rage Riffs, dangerous plodding Conan type Riffs, hints of psychedelia and a few nearly hopeful YOB-ish ones. Bass tone is great and they’ve got a singing drummer on top of that, always love to see a band with a singing drummer! You know thats gotta be difficult. The songs take you deep into a cave where there is no escape from the thing that is after you. This is their third album and also their best which is saying something because Ghorot rules. If you go to their bandcamp you’ll see they have some pretty sick shirts too along with Cds and two limited pressings of Obsidian up, 125 Oxblood and 125 Black.
Bandcamp Friday is coming up soon, treat yourself!
